One of our Android tablets is enrolled in Hexnode and has an active mobile data connection, but the device is showing as Inactive in the portal. The last check-in was several days ago, and a device scan action is still pending. What could stop it from checking in even though internet is working?

Hello @im_jaymes ,

This usually happens when the Android device can access the internet, but the Hexnode app is unable to maintain background communication with the server.

For Android devices, check the following:

  1. Open the Hexnode MDM or Hexnode For Work app on the device and tap the Sync button on the top right corner. This forces an immediate check-in.
  2. Go to Settings > Apps > Hexnode MDM or Hexnode For Work > Battery and set battery usage to Unrestricted or Don’t optimize.
  3. Go to Settings > Apps > Hexnode MDM or Hexnode For Work > Mobile data/Data usage and enable Background data.
  4. Disable Android Data Saver.
  5. If the device is outside its home cellular network area, enable Data Roaming.
  6. In the Hexnode UEM portal, go to Admin > General Settings > Periodic Sync (Android) and set the sync behavior to Foreground service.

Once the tablet successfully checks in, pending actions such as Scan Device should complete and the device should return to Active status.

Does the network port part still matter if the tablet is not on Wi-Fi? This device only uses a SIM connection, no Wi-Fi at all.

For cellular-only devices, Wi-Fi firewall ports are usually not the main thing to check unless the carrier or a private APN is filtering outbound traffic. The more common causes are Android mobile data restrictions, Data Saver, roaming restrictions, battery optimization, or the background sync service being stopped.

Foreground service is especially useful on cellular connections because carriers and Android power management can drop idle background communication channels.
