Android kiosk shows black screen after reboot on Lenovo tabletSolved

I’m setting up Lenovo Android tablets as sealed, wall-mounted single-app kiosks using Android Enterprise Device Owner mode. The kiosk is locked to a web app and needs to survive unattended reboots because the devices won’t be physically accessible after installation.

The kiosk initially worked, but after changing some settings the tablet started going into sleep mode. When I rebooted it, it no longer relaunched into kiosk mode and just showed a black screen.

I already set the screen timeout to Never and configured the kiosk launcher to auto-launch the web app, but I initially used a 1-second auto-launch delay. The device still came back to a black screen after reboot.

What is the correct setup to stop the tablet sleeping and make sure the kiosk relaunches properly after every reboot? I also want the device to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network and allow Wi-Fi switching while testing, without breaking kiosk mode.

Hello @benjay ,

For Android single-app kiosk devices, a black screen after reboot can occur if the kiosk launcher starts before the device has fully initialized system and network components, especially when the kiosk points to a web app.

Configure the policy as follows:

  1. Adjust kiosk auto-launch timing
    • Go to Android Kiosk Lockdown > Launcher.
    • Add the required web app or kiosk browser app to the launcher.
    • Set App auto-launch delay to 5 or 10 seconds instead of 1 second.

A 1-second delay can be too aggressive on some Android builds. A 5–10 second delay gives the OS and network stack enough time to load before the kiosk app is launched.

  2. If the device is already stuck on a black screen
    • Temporarily remove the kiosk policy from the device.
    • Wait for the policy removal to complete.
    • Reapply the updated kiosk policy with the longer auto-launch delay.
    • Reboot the device and verify that it returns to kiosk mode.
  3. For Wi-Fi testing in kiosk mode
    • Under Android Kiosk Lockdown > Peripheral Settings > Network, enable the options Connect to and switch between saved Wi-Fi networks and Add hidden Wi-Fi networks.

Okayy now I got it. I had set the auto-launch delay to 1 second because I wanted the kiosk to come back as fast as possible after a reboot. Looks like that may have made things worse.

If I change it to 10 seconds, will it still end up locked into the web kiosk automatically?

The device should still enter kiosk mode automatically. The delay only adds a short buffer before the kiosk app is launched. It does not require user interaction.

For sealed or unattended deployments, reliability is usually more important than launching instantly. If the web app depends on Wi-Fi, the longer delay is especially useful because it allows the device to reconnect before the kiosk browser opens.

If the device remains stuck after the settings are corrected, remove and reassociate the kiosk policy once. This refreshes the kiosk lockdown state on the device.
