Android tablet not recognized for USB photo transfer in Hexnode kiosk modeSolved

Users are trying to copy photos from Android tablets to a computer using a USB cable, but it does not work while the tablets are in kiosk mode. USB file transfer is enabled in the Hexnode Basic Restrictions policy, and tethering is also allowed. However, when the tablet is connected to the computer, the computer does not seem to recognize it. Could kiosk mode still be blocking USB photo transfer, or is there another Android setting that needs to be checked?

Hello @yasmin_farooq,

If USB file transfer is already allowed in the Hexnode policy, the next step is to isolate whether the behavior is caused by kiosk mode, an Android system setting, or the USB connection itself.

Check the following:

  1. In the Hexnode policy associated with the device, confirm that USB file transfer is allowed under Android Basic Restrictions.
  2. If tethering-related restrictions are configured, ensure tethering is not blocked.
  3. Temporarily disable or exit kiosk mode and connect the tablet to the computer again.
  4. When the USB cable is connected, check whether Android shows a USB mode notification. The device should be set to File Transfer / MTP rather than Charge only.
  5. If the computer still does not recognize the tablet outside kiosk mode, the issue is most likely not caused by Hexnode kiosk. In that case, check the tablet’s Android system settings, including Developer options and default USB configuration.

Kiosk mode can limit user access to system UI elements, but if the computer does not detect the device even after kiosk is disabled, the root cause is usually outside the kiosk configuration.

I checked this further and it looks like the PC wasn’t recognizing the tablet even when I thought it was. Disabling kiosk didn’t really change that part. The fix ended up being on the tablet itself, under Developer options. After changing the USB-related setting there, photo transfer started working.
