Android 15/16 accepting 5-digit PIN despite 6-digit passcode policySolved

I have an Android passcode policy where Customized password complexity is enabled and Min Passcode Length is set to 6. Min password complexity is currently set to None.

On Samsung devices running Android 15 and Android 16, users can still set a 5-digit PIN. At first, passcode compliance showed a warning, but after setting the PIN, the device later showed as compliant in Hexnode.

The devices are enrolled manually by scanning the QR code, without authentication. This seems to happen on more than one Samsung device with the same policy applied. Is there something different about how Android 15/16 handles the minimum PIN length?

Hello @tomas ,

Yes, this is expected behavior due to changes Google made to Android Enterprise starting with Android 12.

The granular settings under Customized password complexity (such as setting an exact minimum passcode length) are legacy parameters strictly supported on Android 5.0 through Android 11.0. For Android 12 and later, the OS ignores these granular fields and relies entirely on predefined password complexity buckets (Low, Medium, High).

Because your policy has Minimum password complexity set to None, the Android 15/16 OS treats the passcode restriction as unenforced, which allows the 5-digit PIN to pass compliance.

To enforce a 6-digit PIN on Android 12 and newer, you must use the predefined complexity levels:

  1. Navigate to Policies in the Hexnode UEM portal and edit your active Android passcode policy.

  2. Change Minimum password complexity from None to High.

  3. Save and reapply the policy to your devices.

Setting the complexity to High is the recommended way to enforce a minimum 6-digit PIN on newer Android versions.

Oh, I didn’t know the OS differences in the way they handles the password complexity, I was assuming both settings would be checked together.
