iOS VPP app asks for Apple ID login when deployed from HexnodeSolved

I added Airtable as a VPP app for our iOS devices, but the install is asking for an account to be logged in on the phone. Other apps we deployed earlier did not ask for this, so I’m not sure why this one behaves differently. The device is on iOS 18.6.1, and the app install shows as failed in the action history.

Hi @thomas_m ,

If a managed iOS app asks for an Apple ID or account login during installation, first confirm whether the app is being deployed as a VPP app or as a regular App Store app.

For VPP deployment, Hexnode UEM must be able to detect available licenses from Apple Business. Check the following:

  1. Sign in to Apple Business with an account that has the Administrator or Content Manager role.
  2. Go to Apps & Services > Apps and Books.
  3. Search for the app and confirm that licenses have been acquired for the correct location.
  4. In Hexnode UEM, go to Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Apple VPP.
  5. Click Sync for the relevant VPP account.
  6. After the sync completes, retry the app installation or redeploy the app.

If the app was added to Hexnode before the VPP license sync, Hexnode may still treat it like a store app, which can result in an iTunes or Apple ID login prompt on the device.

I had already added licenses in Apple Business Manager, but the install still gave the same account/login error. Does that mean the licenses were not actually applied?

Not necessarily. If the licenses were already acquired in Apple Business, the missing step is often the VPP sync in Hexnode.

Apple Business and Hexnode UEM do not always reflect new app licenses instantly. The VPP sync updates Hexnode UEM with the latest purchased app licenses and assigned location details. Once the sync completes, the app should appear as a proper VPP app in Hexnode UEM and can be installed silently or as a managed app, depending on the device supervision and deployment settings.

Make sure you are checking Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Apple VPP in Hexnode UEM portal, not the Reports section. The sync option is available from the Apple VPP configuration page.
