I’m planning to push an iOS update to a group of iPads using Hexnode. If I choose the “Download and Install” option, does it only download the update in the background, or will it also restart the iPad automatically? Trying to understand this before triggering it during active use.

Yes. When the “Download and Install” option is initiated for an iOS update, the update is first downloaded in the background. Once the download is complete, the iPad automatically restarts to complete the installation process.
If the devices are in active use, it is best to run this action during a maintenance window or outside working hours, since the restart happens as part of completing the update installation.
