iOS multi-app kiosk apps greyed out until restrictions set to Allow all appsSolved

Hi everyone. Several of our supervised iOS devices in a Hexnode multi-app kiosk policy are showing disabled apps with greyed-out icons. Restarting the devices and removing/reapplying the kiosk policy did not help.

The required apps are explicitly listed under the iOS required app configuration, and the devices show as compliant in the portal. Could this be caused by a restriction inside the policy, and how do we resolve this so the apps become active?

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.

Yes, this behavior is typically caused by an iOS restriction applied to the same devices that prevents the apps from being installed or run, rather than an issue with the multi-app kiosk payload itself.

Even if a device shows as compliant (which simply means the policy successfully reached the device), restrictive app allowlist or blocklist settings can block the required kiosk apps from functioning, resulting in those greyed-out icons.

To resolve this, you will need to check your associated iOS restrictions and adjust them to allow the apps:

  1. In the Hexnode portal, navigate to Manage and open one of the affected iOS devices.
  2. Go to the Policies sub-tab to see every policy associated with that device.
  3. Open each relevant policy and check iOS > Restrictions > Basic and iOS > Restrictions > Advanced.
  4. Look for app-related restrictions that limit which apps can be used or installed.
  5. Change the app restriction setting to Allow all apps, save the policy, and let the device sync.

Once the policy syncs with the Allow all apps configuration, the greyed-out app icons will become active. For future kiosk setups, it is best to avoid applying strict app allow/block restrictions alongside a kiosk policy unless every single required kiosk and supporting app is explicitly accounted for in the allowed list.

I hope this helps resolve your issue. Feel free to reach out if you have any more doubts or need further assistance.

Best regards,
George,
