Disable gif keyboard on Samsung devices in kiosk mode using knox service pluginSolved

I am trying to block users from sending GIFs on our Samsung Android devices managed with Hexnode. The GIF option appears right on the default Samsung Keyboard (even inside restricted apps like Dragon: Special ED), so blocking URLs hasn’t helped.

I tried looking under Android app configurations, but the Samsung Keyboard does not show up like a normal Managed Google Play app. I even added the package manually, but it still didn’t give me any configuration options.

I was reading that I need to use the Knox service plugin (KSP) with a KPE Premium license key. We actually have that configured and the “Disable GIF Keyboard” setting checked in KSP, but it is still not applying to the devices. They are running in kiosk mode—could the kiosk policy be interfering with KSP’s ability to apply the keyboard setting?

Hi @schyler-scott,
You are absolutely on the right track! Because the Samsung Keyboard is a native system app, it does not expose standard Managed Google Play configurations. Using the Knox Service Plugin (KSP) with a premium key is the exact right approach.

Since you already have KSP configured but it is failing to apply, the culprit is almost certainly your kiosk policy. When a device is locked in kiosk mode, it aggressively blocks background processes. For KSP to successfully push that restriction to the system keyboard, those components need permission to run.

Here is how you can resolve this:

  1. Open your assigned kiosk policy.
  2. Navigate to Android > Kiosk Lockdown > Background Apps.
  3. Add the Knox Service Plugin and the required Samsung Keyboard system packages to this allowed list.
  4. Save and deploy the policy.

Once the policy syncs, I highly recommend restarting the devices. This forces the OS to refresh cleanly, allowing KSP to apply the restriction without the kiosk mode blocking it.

That was exactly it! I added the KSP and keyboard packages to the Background Apps list in our kiosk policy and pushed the update.

After giving the test tablets a quick restart, the GIF button completely disappeared from the Samsung Keyboard while the kiosk mode remained perfectly intact. I didn’t realize the kiosk was suffocating the KSP background process. Thanks for the quick fix!

Hi @schyler-scott. I am so glad to hear that adjusting the background apps resolved the issue and the GIF button is successfully blocked!

Kiosk mode is designed to be incredibly strict, so making sure essential system plugins are allowed to communicate in the background is a great troubleshooting step to keep in your back pocket for future KSP deployments.

Please let me know if you run into any other hurdles with your Samsung fleet.
