AEO vs…. GEOSolved

Management just requested a Q3 roadmap that specifically separates our AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) strategies.

I’m struggling to see the difference. Aren’t both concepts just optimizing for visibility in AI? I need to understand if there is a distinct difference in execution between the two, and which specific platforms they each target. Any advice on how to structure this presentation would be appreciated.

The terms overlap heavily, but there is a clear platform and structural distinction you can use to build your roadmap.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets platforms that pull a single, definitive fact—think voice assistants (Alexa, Siri) and search features like Google’s AI Overviews or standard featured snippets. The user wants a quick, objective answer. Your AEO roadmap should focus on technical execution: implementing strict FAQ schema, building concise glossary pages, and formatting data into direct bullet points so an engine can easily extract a verifiable fact.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is catered to conversational LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. These engines tackle complex, multi-layered queries by synthesizing original answers from multiple sources. They aren’t looking for a quick fact. Your GEO roadmap requires long-form content, original statistics, and thought leadership so the AI uses your site as a primary foundational source to build a complex argument.

Building on Tara’s breakdown, splitting them up actually makes a lot of sense for a management presentation because it divides your workload into two clear pillars.

Think of it this way for your leadership team: AEO is your technical data hygiene to feed voice search and Google snippets. GEO is your high-level content strategy to convince ChatGPT and Gemini to recommend your brand in a conversation.
