Devices Not Connecting to Macs, issue with iTunes pairing?Solved

Our devices are enrolled through Apple Business Manager using Apple Configurator, and while creating the enrollment profile we unchecked the “Allow iTunes Pairing” option.

After deploying this profile, we noticed that our iPads and iPhones are no longer able to connect to our Macs. What’s confusing is that the UI mentions this option only affects iOS versions 13 and below.

All of our devices are running the latest iOS and iPadOS versions, so based on that description it shouldn’t be impacting them. Has anyone come across this before, or are we missing something about how this setting behaves?

From what I understand, the allow_pairing key is marked as deprecated by Apple.

You can refer to Apple’s documentation here: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/devicemanagement/profile#:~:text=allow_pairing,property%20was%20deprecated.

In general, when something is deprecated, it means Apple no longer recommends using it and may remove it in future versions. But it doesn’t always mean the functionality stops working immediately. In many cases, deprecated keys can still be honored by the OS for backward compatibility, even on newer versions.

So it’s possible the setting is still being enforced despite the UI suggesting otherwise.

Hello,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Our team reviewed your scenario and performed internal testing to better understand the behavior. While Apple’s official documentation states that the allow_pairing key was deprecated starting with iOS 13, the behavior we observed during testing suggests that the setting still has an impact on newer OS versions as well.

During our validation, we found that disabling this option continues to affect device pairing even on recent iOS and iPadOS versions, including the latest releases. Because of this, the current UI description does not accurately reflect the real behavior of the setting.

We have already raised this internally with the relevant teams so that the UI messaging can be updated accordingly. The corrected description will be reflected in your consoles in an upcoming update.

We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to highlight this. Contributions like this help us keep the platform accurate and reliable for everyone.

Please feel free to continue sharing any issues, ideas, or feedback you may have. Your inputs help us strengthen the product every day.

Best Regards,
George
