Remote View not working on Google TV in Single App Kiosk modeSolved

We’re testing a few Google TVs in Single App Kiosk mode with an Android app. The app deployment and kiosk setup mostly work, but Remote View/Remote Control is confusing.

From the Hexnode portal, Remote View only seems to show still images instead of a live session, and Remote Control does not let us interact with the TV. These TVs may be deployed at remote sites, so we were hoping to use this for troubleshooting without travelling onsite.

Is Remote Control supported on Google TV/Android TV devices? Also, are there any network requirements for Remote View to work properly?

Google TV devices running Android TV OS have some platform-level limitations with remote troubleshooting. Remote Control is not supported on Android TV OS devices. You will not be able to interact with or control the TV screen remotely in the same way you can with supported Android phones or tablets. Remote View, however, should be available. If Remote View only shows static screenshots, fails to update, or does not connect properly, check whether the network allows the required Hexnode remote access endpoints and ports. Firewalls, content filters, or restricted facility networks can block the remote viewing session even when the device itself is online and the kiosk app is working. Recommended checks:

  1. Confirm the TV is enrolled and online in Hexnode.
  2. Ensure the required Hexnode remote access/remote view app component is deployed if applicable to your setup.
  3. Verify that the network firewall allows the required Hexnode Remote View URLs and ports.
  4. Test Remote View again after the allowlist changes are applied.

If the app launches correctly on the TV and kiosk mode works locally, but Remote View does not connect or refresh properly, the most likely cause is a network restriction rather than a kiosk policy issue.

That matches what we’re seeing. The TV itself is online and the kiosk app runs fine, but the remote session is not behaving like a live view. We also don’t manage the network at the test location, so firewall restrictions are possible.

We ran into something similar with Android TV devices behind a managed network. The kiosk policy was fine, but the remote viewing service was being blocked by the site firewall. Once the network team allow-listed the required Hexnode endpoints, Remote View started working as expected. Remote Control still was not available because of the Android TV limitation.

That clarifies it. We’ll treat Remote Control as unsupported on Google TV/Android TV and work with the network team to allow-list the required Remote View URLs and ports.
