Microsoft Entra ID sync stuck in Pending or In Progress in HexnodeSolved

Our Microsoft Entra ID sync status in Hexnode was stuck and didn’t seem to update properly. It first showed as pending/stuck, and after opening the Entra ID connection and saving the configuration again, the status changed to “Sync initiated” and then “Sync in progress”.

Is this expected behavior? Also, how long does an Entra ID sync usually take in Hexnode?

In Hexnode, the Microsoft Entra ID sync should usually complete within a few minutes, but the exact duration depends on the number of groups being synced and the size of the directory data. If the Entra sync status appears stuck in Pending, Sync initiated, or Sync in progress for longer than expected, try refreshing the Entra ID connection configuration:

  1. Go to Admin > Microsoft Entra ID.
  2. Open the configured domain or Entra ID connection.
  3. Proceed through the Directory Services configuration steps.
  4. Click Save without necessarily changing the existing configuration.
  5. Wait a few minutes and check whether the sync status changes to Success.

    Saving the configuration can trigger a fresh handshake between Hexnode and Microsoft Entra ID, which may clear a stale or stuck sync status.

I tried saving the Entra ID configuration again. Right after that, the status changed from the stuck state to “Sync initiated”, and after refreshing the page it showed “Sync in progress”. After waiting a bit, it looked like the sync was moving normally again. Was this caused by something on the admin side, or is it more of a sync status issue?

This can happen when there is a temporary timing mismatch during the Entra ID sync status update. In that state, the portal may show the sync as already in progress even though the sync workflow has not fully moved forward, which can make the status appear stuck.

Saving the Entra ID configuration forces a fresh connection handshake and allows the sync process to restart cleanly. This is not typically caused by an incorrect admin action.

After the status clears, monitor the Entra connection for the next few scheduled sync cycles to confirm that it continues updating normally.
