Lenovo Android kiosk freezes or shows black screen when switching Ethernet/Wi-FiSolved

We’re testing Lenovo Android tablets in a strict single-app kiosk setup. The kiosk app needs to stay locked down after reboot, block access to Settings, prevent factory reset, and still allow controlled Wi-Fi switching from our own app.

A few issues showed up during testing:

– If users spam navigation or physical buttons during startup, there seems to be a short window before the kiosk fully relaunches.
– Gboard had a settings shortcut that could open areas we don’t want users accessing.
– When Ethernet is connected and we try to switch to Wi-Fi, some tablets freeze or go to a black screen.
– Our app’s Wi-Fi button sometimes returns an “Action not supported” error.
– We need factory reset and recovery menu access blocked as much as possible.

The devices are Lenovo Android 13 tablets in single-app kiosk mode. What Hexnode kiosk settings should be changed to stabilize this and keep the lockdown secure?

Hi @remy,

For this type of Lenovo Android kiosk deployment, the behavior usually comes from a combination of strict Lock Task Mode enforcement and Android system components trying to perform background network or hardware transitions.

For the freezing or black screen during Ethernet/Wi-Fi changes, update the kiosk policy to allow the required system components to run in the background. Go to Policies > Kiosk Lockdown > Android Kiosk Lockdown > Background Apps.

Add these packages:

– com.android.systemui — handles system UI rendering and status-related transitions.
– com.android.networkstack — handles IP assignment and network stack operations.
– com.lenovo.oemconfig.rel — allows Lenovo OEMConfig components to apply hardware-level settings correctly.

Then configure restricted network access under Policies > Kiosk Lockdown > Android Kiosk Lockdown > Peripheral Settings > Network.

Enable:

– Display Network Settings
– Allow users to turn Wi-Fi on/off

This may add a Settings icon inside the kiosk interface, but it is not the full Android Settings app. It opens a restricted network settings screen for permitted connectivity actions only.

For the startup gap, set the kiosk app relaunch delay after reboot to 0 seconds. This helps the kiosk app relaunch immediately after the device boots and reduces the window where users can interact with navigation controls.

For Gboard, use Managed App Configurations to disable the Gboard Settings icon. This prevents the keyboard from becoming a shortcut into device settings.

For factory reset prevention on Lenovo devices, deploy the Lenovo OEMConfig app and configure the relevant hard reset restrictions, including blocking factory reset and ADB update options from the recovery path, where supported by the OEM firmware.
