An iPad that should no longer be managed is showing the Remote Management/Hexnode enrollment screen during setup. I searched for it in Manage > Devices using the serial number, but it does not show up there because the enrollment was never completed.

However, the device appears under Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Automated Device Enrollment > Devices. Does that mean it is still tied to Automated Device Enrollment? Can it be removed directly from Hexnode, or does it need to be changed somewhere else? I don’t currently have access to Apple Business Manager. So there’s no way to remove the enrollment prompt from Hexnode alone?

Hi @marien,

Yes, if an iPad appears under Automated Device Enrollment but not under Manage > Devices, it usually means the device is assigned to the Hexnode MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, but the device has not completed enrollment into Hexnode. In this state, the iPad can still show the Remote Management screen during setup because Automated Device Enrollment is controlled from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

This cannot be completed only from the Hexnode portal. The MDM server assignment originates from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, so the device must be unassigned there first.

To stop the iPad from prompting for Hexnode enrollment:

  1. Sign in to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.
  2. Go to Devices and search for the iPad using its serial number.
  3. Select the device.
  4. Unassign it from device management or remove the assigned MDM server.
  5. Save the change.
  6. In Hexnode, go to Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Automated Device Enrollment > Accounts.
  7. Run Sync all ADE accounts.
  8. Restart the iPad and go through setup again.

After that, syncing the ADE account in Hexnode updates the portal, and restarting the iPad should stop the forced enrollment prompt from appearing during setup.

We found whoever managed ABM in our organization and had them remove the MDM server assignment there. After syncing ADE in Hexnode and restarting the iPad, it no longer tried to enroll automatically. Appreciate it, working fine now.
