iOS ADE devices missing in Hexnode after Apple token and APNs expirySolved

Our Apple VPP token expired recently, and after renewing it I noticed our ADE token also seemed to be expired. Devices were still in Apple Business Manager, but they were no longer showing under Automated Device Enrollment > Devices in Hexnode, and I couldn’t control the iOS/iPadOS devices from the portal.

After that, I also saw a prompt saying the APNs certificate had expired. Does renewing the ADE token restore the device list, and do ADE/VPP/APNs renewals have to be done every year?

An expired ADE/DEP token will not remove devices from Apple Business Manager itself. However, it will stop Hexnode from syncing with Apple, so devices may disappear from the ADE device list in Hexnode and management actions may not work as expected.

To renew the ADE token:

1. Sign in to Apple Business.

2. Go to Devices.

3. Open Management and select the relevant MDM server under Device Management Services.

4. Click the ellipsis menu and choose Download Token.

5. Confirm the prompt to download the new server token.

6. In Hexnode, go to Admin > Automated Device Enrollment > Accounts.

7. Edit the corresponding ADE account.

8. Upload the new server token file.

9. Save the changes.

10. Sync the ADE account and then sync the devices.

Once the token is renewed and synced, the ADE device list in Hexnode should populate again, provided the devices are still assigned to the same MDM server in Apple Business.

Renewed the ADE token from Apple Business Manager, uploaded it in Hexnode, and synced the ADE account. The devices are showing again now.

So this is something we need to repeat every year? Looks like the token has a 365-day limit.

Yes. Apple ADE/DEP and VPP server tokens expire 365 days from the date they are generated. They need to be renewed annually to keep Apple Business Manager, app licensing, and ADE sync working correctly in Hexnode.

It is a good practice to set a reminder a few weeks before the expiry date so the renewal can be completed before device sync or app deployment is affected.
