Android Enterprise QR enrollment fails with “couldn’t set up your device” and restartsSolved

I’m trying to enroll a new Android Enterprise tablet from the out-of-box setup screen. I tapped the welcome screen 6 times, scanned the Hexnode QR code, and it starts processing, but then it stops with: “couldn’t set up your device, for help contact your IT admin.” After that, the tablet restarts. This is usually done in the office, but I’m trying it from home. The tablet is brand new, so I can’t open normal Android settings to switch networks or configure anything manually. We still have free device licenses, and Android enrollment is allowed in enrollment restrictions. Could this be related to the Wi-Fi configured in the enrollment setup?

This behavior can occur if the Android Enterprise enrollment profile includes a Wi-Fi configuration that the device cannot successfully use during provisioning.

During QR code enrollment from the Android welcome screen, the device relies on the enrollment configuration to complete setup. If a Wi-Fi profile is pushed as part of that flow and the network details are no longer valid, unavailable, or not usable from the current location, provisioning can fail with the generic message: “couldn’t set up your device, for help contact your IT admin”.

Since licenses are available and Android is allowed under enrollment restrictions, try the following:

  1. Go to the Android Enterprise enrollment settings in Hexnode.
  2. Open the enrollment profile being used for QR enrollment.
  3. Remove the Wi-Fi configuration from the enrollment profile.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Generate or use the updated QR enrollment flow and try enrolling the device again.

If the device enrolls after removing the Wi-Fi configuration, the issue is most likely with the Wi-Fi profile included in the enrollment profile, such as an outdated SSID, password, security type, or a network that is only available at the office.

Removing the Wi-Fi configuration from the enrollment profile worked. The tablet enrolled successfully after that. Looks like the office Wi-Fi settings may have changed, so I’ll check that separately before adding it back.
