Android apps assigned through Hexnode start downloading but never finishSolved

I’m deploying a few managed Google Play apps to an Android device group. The devices are in kiosk mode, and all of them are refusing to install the same two apps. One app was accidentally deleted from a tablet and now it won’t redownload either.

The downloads can be initiated, but they stall instead of completing. I’ve already tried Scan Device, Scan for Apps, restarting the tablets, remotely launching the Google Play Store, recreating the work accounts, and clearing Play Store app data/cache. Has anyone seen this with Hexnode app deployment?

Hi @remy,

This can happen when the app assignment reaches the device correctly, but Google Play blocks or cannot complete the installation.

A useful way to confirm the exact reason is to check the app from the Hexnode for Work app on the device:

  1. Exit kiosk mode on the device.
  2. Open the Hexnode for Work app.
  3. Tap the hamburger menu icon () in the top-left corner.
  4. Go to Apps.
  5. Tap the affected app and check whether it allows installation or displays a compatibility message.

If the apps appear there but do not install, the issue is usually outside the Hexnode policy assignment itself. Common causes include Android OS version compatibility, device model restrictions, or Google Play app availability settings.

That helped. After checking from Hexnode for Work > Apps, we could see that the affected applications were built for an older Android version and aren’t compatible with this tablet model. So the deployment wasn’t actually stuck because of Hexnode — Google Play was preventing the install. What can be done now?

Hi @remy,

Hexnode can assign and trigger the managed app installation, but the final install is still subject to Google Play and the app developer’s compatibility rules.

If an app is not compatible with the device’s Android version or model, it may appear to start downloading and then fail or stall. The same applies when trying to redownload an app that was previously removed.

The available options are:

– Use an updated version of the app that supports the tablet’s Android version.
– Contact the app developer to confirm supported Android versions and device models.
– Use an alternative app with compatible Android support.
– Deploy the app only to devices that meet the app’s compatibility requirements.

Checking the app from the Hexnode for Work app is a good first diagnostic step when managed Google Play app downloads start but do not complete.
