Slack update stuck as initiated on macOS in HexnodeSolved

I pushed a Slack update to a Mac through patch automation, and then also tried using Install Application to update Slack manually. Both update entries stayed at “initiated” and didn’t seem to finish.

Is there anything specific I should check when a macOS app update is initiated but not completing?

Hi @douglas,

On macOS, an application update may remain in the initiated state if the app is currently open on the user’s device.

If Slack is running while the update is triggered, macOS can defer the installation to avoid interrupting or crashing the active application. Ask the user to fully quit Slack, not just close the window, and then allow the update to continue.

Recommended check:

  1. Confirm Slack is not running in the Dock or menu bar.
  2. Quit Slack completely using Slack > Quit Slack or Command + Q.
  3. Wait for the app update action or patch task to complete.
  4. Refresh the device/app status in Hexnode and verify whether the update has moved from initiated to completed.

For recurring app updates, it is usually better to schedule patch deployments during off-hours when the app is less likely to be in use.
