iOS required app not updating after successful scanSolved

Several supervised iOS devices completed a device scan successfully, but required app updates still did not install. Some app install actions stayed pending for a few hours, and others later failed with the message: “device already has the latest version of this app.”

For most apps, that message seems correct. However, one store app in the Hexnode app list shows a newer version available, while many enrolled devices are still several versions behind. The app is assigned through a policy under Required Apps. What should be checked when the scan succeeds but the app update does not happen?

Hello @jimena ,

For supervised iOS devices, a successful device scan only confirms that the device checked in and reported its inventory details. It does not guarantee that every assigned app update can successfully install.

In this scenario, the most likely blocker is the app’s minimum supported OS version. While Hexnode UEM initiates the update command via the Required Apps policy, the device’s operating system will silently reject the installation if the device’s iOS version is lower than the required one.

To troubleshoot this:

  1. Look up the specific application on the Apple App Store to find its minimum required iOS version.

  2. Check the current OS version of your affected devices under the device details page in the Hexnode UEM portal.

  3. If the device OS is lower than the app’s requirement, the update will not process.

For example, if the latest version of the app requires iOS 17.0 or later, but the device is running iOS 16.5, the device must be upgraded first. Once the OS update is complete, the Required Apps policy will automatically push the latest app version to the device.

Ah now I see it, after checking the App Store details, the newer version does require a higher iOS version than these devices currently have. We’ll update the OS to get the updated app.
