iOS device still shows removed Entra user after restore and cannot be wipedSolved

We had an iOS device assigned to a user who had left the organization. The user was removed from Microsoft Entra ID, and after the deletion period the account was restored from the deleted users/trash area.

The account now appears active in Entra ID, but Hexnode still showed the device user as unavailable. The info message beside the user field said the assigned user was removed from the domain and that the device should be reassigned or disenrolled.

The restored user is visible under Users in Hexnode, but on the device page it looked like the only option was to disenroll. I need to wipe the device so it can be reused. Does restoring the Entra user automatically make remote actions available again, or is there another step?

Hi @eduardo,

When a Microsoft Entra ID user is deleted and later restored, Hexnode may not automatically update the existing device ownership state until the user is synced and reassociated with the device.

Try the following:

  1. Confirm that the restored user is listed in Hexnode under Manage > Users.
  2. If the restored user was just reactivated in Entra ID, run a manual sync from Admin > Integrations > Microsoft Entra ID, or wait a few minutes for the sync to complete.
  3. Go to Manage > Devices and open the affected iOS device.
  4. From Actions, use Edit > Change Owner or the equivalent reassignment option.
  5. Select the restored user and assign them back to the device.

This reassociation is required because the device owner attributes and related policy assignments need to be updated after the Entra account was removed and restored.

After the user is reassigned, remote actions such as Clear Passcode or Device Wipe can be initiated, provided the device is online.
