Android Enterprise tablets not downloading apps because default policy is missingSolved

New Android Enterprise-enrolled tablets are not downloading the required apps after enrollment. The app policy used to apply automatically to every new Android tablet, but now I have to add it manually.

Older enrolled tablets still have the correct policy applied, and they are working fine. The issue only seems to happen with newly enrolled Android Enterprise devices. How can I make sure new Android devices get the default policy automatically like before?

Hi @benjay,

In Hexnode, a policy is not attached directly as part of Android Enterprise enrollment. The policy is applied after enrollment through an associated Device Group or through an Automation rule.

For this case, compare a previously enrolled working device with a newly enrolled device:

  1. Go to Manage > Devices.
  2. Open a device where the policy was applied automatically.
  3. Check the Policies sub-tab and confirm how the policy is associated.
  4. Open the newly enrolled device and check whether it belongs to the same Device Group.

If the older device received the policy through a group such as All Android Devices, but the new device is not part of that group, the policy will not apply automatically and the apps assigned through that policy will not download.

I checked this. The older tablet has the policy through the All Android Devices group, but the new Android Enterprise tablet is not associated with any device group. I don’t really want to create a new dynamic group because this was working before. I just want every new Android device to get added to All Android Devices again.

Hi @benjay,

Newly enrolled Android devices should be added to the All Android Devices group by default, unless that group has an exception configured.

Check the All Android Devices group and review its exception settings. If the newly enrolled devices match an exclusion rule or were added as exceptions, they will not join the group automatically. As a result, any policy associated with that group will not apply to those devices.

To restore the previous behavior:

  1. Go to Manage > Device Groups.
  2. Open All Android Devices.
  3. Check whether any exceptions are configured.
  4. Remove or adjust the exception that excludes the new Android Enterprise devices.
  5. Confirm that the required policy is still associated with the All Android Devices group.

Once the device is included in the group again, the associated policy should apply automatically, and the apps assigned through that policy should begin downloading.
