iOS VPP app not updating in Required Apps policySolved

One of our managed iPhones is not showing the latest version of a required App Store app. The device is active and checked in recently, and it has the correct policy assigned. The app is included through an app group under Required Apps.

VPP also looks fine: the app has enough licenses, and the Apple VPP account is active and synced. What’s odd is that multiple iPhones under the same policy show an older app version, with the last app update action showing several days ago.

Is there anything else I should check when an iOS VPP app does not appear to update automatically through Hexnode?

Hi @haniel,

For an iOS App Store app deployed through VPP, start by confirming the following:

  1. The device is active and has checked in recently.
  2. The correct policy is associated with the device.
  3. The app or app group is added under the policy’s Required Apps section.
  4. The app has enough available VPP licenses.
  5. The Apple VPP account is not expired and the latest VPP sync completed successfully.

If all of these are correct, the app version shown in Hexnode may sometimes be based on the last reported app inventory rather than the current installed version. Run an app inventory scan on the affected device:

Manage > Devices > select the device > Actions > Scanning and Monitoring > Scan for Apps

After the scan completes, open the device’s Applications sub-tab and check the installed version reported for the app. This refreshes the app inventory and helps confirm whether the app is actually outdated on the device or whether Hexnode was showing stale app version data.

Does Scan for Apps actually trigger the update, or does it only refresh what Hexnode displays? I’m seeing the older version listed for several devices, so I’m trying to understand if this fixes the update issue or just the reporting.

Scan for Apps does not force-update the App Store app. It refreshes the application inventory reported by the device.

In this scenario, since the policy assignment, Required Apps configuration, VPP licenses, and VPP account status were already correct, the scan is the right next step to rule out stale inventory data. Once the scan succeeds, compare the version shown under the Applications sub-tab with the version available for the app.

If the Applications sub-tab shows the latest version after the scan, the app update has already occurred and only the reported inventory was outdated. If the old version is still shown after the scan, then the app has not updated on the device and the issue should be investigated further at the app deployment/VPP update level.
