iOS policy apps prompt for Apple ID and settings not applying in HexnodeSolved

I created an iOS policy in Hexnode and pushed it to a few new iPads/tablets. The policy shows as associated, but the required app did not install and the device is asking for an Apple ID before installing the app.

One device also had an Android policy associated by mistake, so I removed that. The other iOS devices only have the Apple policy, but they still show the Apple ID prompt for the app. Is this expected for iOS app deployment, or is something wrong with the policy? Also, would this stop the other iOS settings in the policy from applying?

Hi @yasmin_farooq,

For iOS app installations to happen silently through Hexnode, the app must be deployed using Apple Business app licenses, commonly referred to as VPP licenses.

If the app is added as a required app but does not have an available VPP license assigned through Apple Business, iOS may prompt for an Apple ID during installation. This is expected behavior for non-silent App Store installations.

To install the app without Apple ID prompts:

  1. Purchase or acquire the app licenses in Apple Business.
  2. Sync the apps/licenses with Hexnode.
  3. Add the VPP app to the required apps section of the iOS policy.
  4. Ensure there are enough available licenses for the target devices.
  5. Save and associate the policy with the devices.

The VPP license requirement applies to silent app installation only. It does not prevent other iOS policy settings from applying.

So if the app is prompting for Apple ID, that does not necessarily mean the whole iOS policy failed? I was worried because the settings also seemed delayed.

Correct @yasmin_farooq. An app installation failure caused by missing VPP licenses does not block unrelated iOS settings in the same policy.

For settings, the policy should apply once the device is active and checks in with Hexnode. If the device is online, enrolled correctly, and communicating with the portal, supported iOS restrictions and configurations are generally pushed immediately after the policy association or the next device check-in.

The Android policy you removed from one device was a good cleanup step, but the Apple ID prompt on the iOS devices points specifically to the app deployment method rather than the rest of the iOS policy.
