iOS supervised device locked by another MDM, not showing in HexnodeSolved

I have a supervised iPhone that is showing a message saying it is managed by another organization. I wanted to confirm whether the device is enrolled in Hexnode so it can be unlocked or released.

I searched for the device in Hexnode using the serial number and IMEI, but nothing shows up under Devices. On the iPhone, the supervision screen shows a different organization name. Does that mean Hexnode is managing it, or is it controlled by another MDM?

Hello @liam_t ,

If the iPhone is supervised and enrolled in Hexnode, it should appear in the Hexnode portal when searched by its serial number.

To verify this:

  1. Go to Manage > Devices in the Hexnode UEM portal.
  2. Search using the device serial number. You may also try the IMEI if available.
  3. On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and check which management profiles are installed.
  4. Also check the supervision message shown on the device. If it says the device is managed by another organization, that organization is the current MDM authority for the device.

If the device does not appear in Hexnode UEM and the supervision or management profile points to another organization, it is not currently managed by Hexnode. In that case, Hexnode cannot remove the management lock or release the device. The device must be released or unenrolled by the organization or MDM provider shown on the device, or from the Apple Business/School Manager account that assigned it to that MDM.

I checked the Settings, and the profile listed there is not Hexnode. The device also shows a different organization name on the supervision screen. So searching in Hexnode by serial number not returning anything is expected?

Yes. If the device is supervised but does not appear in Hexnode by serial number, and the installed management profile belongs to another organization, it means the device is enrolled elsewhere.

For supervised Apple devices, the MDM association is usually controlled through Apple Business/School Manager. The organization that owns the device assignment must either:

  • remove the MDM profile from their MDM console,
  • release or unassign the device from their Apple Business/School Manager account, or
  • reassign the device to the correct MDM server if it should be managed by Hexnode.

After reassignment, the device typically needs to be erased and reactivated to enroll into the newly assigned MDM.
