VPP apps not installing on iPads because macOS version was added in Apple Business ManagerSolved

I’m trying to get a few apps installed on managed iPads through Hexnode and Apple Business Manager. The devices are enrolled and checking in, but some apps, including Microsoft Excel, are not showing up on the iPads.

The app is available in our Apple Business VPP library, but it was not appearing as expected when added through the app policy. We are using required apps in the Hexnode policy for these iPads, which are also used in kiosk mode.

Has anyone seen this happen with VPP apps where the app is in ABM but does not install on iPads?

This can happen if the app purchased in Apple Business is not the iOS/iPadOS version of the app.

For VPP app deployment to iPads, make sure the app in Apple Business Manager is compatible with iOS/iPadOS. If the macOS version of an app is added to the VPP library, it will not deploy to iPads even if the device is enrolled and the policy is associated correctly.

Recommended checks:

1. Open Apple Business and review the app in the Apps and Books section.

2. Confirm that the app platform is iOS/iPadOS, not macOS.

3. If the wrong platform version was purchased, remove or ignore the macOS version for iPad deployment.

4. Add or purchase the correct iOS/iPadOS version of the app.

5. Sync VPP apps in Hexnode so the updated app list is available.

6. Add the correct iOS/iPadOS app to the required apps list in the target Hexnode policy.

7. Wait for the devices to check in, or initiate a device sync if needed.

Once the correct iOS version is assigned through the policy, it should install on the managed iPads during the next check-in.
