Hexnode UEM location scan fails on iOS and VPP app shows MissingSolved

I’m trying to get device locations for both iOS and Android devices in Hexnode, but none of them are showing a location.

I tried running Scan Device Location, but it failed with this message: “Failed to fetch the device location. Ensure that location services are enabled on the device and that the Hexnode UEM app is opened at least once. Location access permission should be granted for the Hexnode UEM app from Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Hexnode UEM > Always.”

Location Services is enabled on the iPhones, but I couldn’t initially find the “Always” option for the Hexnode UEM app. Also, the Hexnode UEM app does not seem to be installed on every iOS device, so I’m trying to push it using VPP. Some devices show the app status as Missing.

Hello @mila_diaz ,

For iOS location tracking, confirm the following first:

  1. A Location Tracking policy is associated with the devices.
  2. The devices are actively checking in with Hexnode UEM.
  3. Location Services is enabled on the device.
  4. The Hexnode UEM app has been opened at least once on the device.
  5. Location permission for Hexnode UEM is set to Always.

On iOS, the permission can be checked from: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Hexnode UEM > Always

If users are changing the location settings, you can restrict changes using Screen Time:

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions and enable it.
  3. Open Location Services and ensure Location Services is turned on.
  4. Set Hexnode UEM location access to Always.
  5. Select Don’t Allow Changes to prevent users from modifying Location Services.
  6. Return to Screen Time screen and configure Lock Screen Time Settings to set a Screen Time passcode.

After this, run Scan Device Location again from Hexnode UEM and check whether the remote action completes successfully.

Okayy, now I get the location permissions on ios. The remaining issue is the Hexnode UEM app itself. It isn’t installed on all the iPhones. I added the Hexnode UEM VPP app to Required Apps in the policy, but the status still shows Missing on some devices.

If Hexnode UEM is added as a VPP app, you can push it to iOS devices through a policy

If the app still shows Missing, check whether there are enough available VPP licenses for the app. In Hexnode UEM, go to the Apps tab, filter for VPP apps, search for Hexnode UEM, and verify the available license count.

If you see an error such as “No available application license was found. Purchase new VPP licenses and try again,” it usually means all current VPP licenses for that app have already been assigned.

I checked and the VPP license count was fully used. I added more licenses for Hexnode UEM in Apple Business, but Hexnode still didn’t seem to pick them up right away.

After purchasing or assigning additional VPP licenses in Apple Business, sync the VPP account in Hexnode UEM so the new license count is reflected.

Go to: Admin > Apple Business Manager > Apple VPP > Sync the required account.

Once the sync completes, check the Hexnode UEM VPP app again under Apps tab and confirm that the available license count has increased. Then reassociate the Required Apps policy so the app installation command can be sent to the affected devices.

The location tracking issue and the app deployment issue are related in this case because iOS location scans require the Hexnode UEM app to be installed, opened at least once, and granted location permission always.
