apple devices showing inactive after APNs certificate expiredSolved

A few managed apple devices suddenly started showing as inactive in hexnode. The last check-in was about 2-3 weeks ago, but the devices still had wifi and cellular internet access. the apns certificate had expired, so I renewed it from the Hexnode portal and uploaded the new certificate from the apple push certificates portal. The renewal looked successful, but the devices were still listed as inactive right after that. is there an extra step needed after renewing the apns cert, or does it just take time for the devices to sync again?

Hi @jennifer,

An expired APNs certificate pauses all MDM communication, which means the devices will not automatically reflect as active the moment the new certificate is uploaded. Assuming the renewal was processed correctly using the original Apple ID (and not generated as a brand-new certificate), you simply need to manually prompt the devices to check in.

You can re-establish this connection by initiating a scan:

  1. Navigate to the Manage tab in your Hexnode UEM portal.
  2. Select the affected devices from the list.
  3. Click on Actions > Scanning & Monitoring > Scan Device.

Once the command is processed, the last check-in time will update, and the inactive status will clear.

Please trigger the scan and let us know if the devices successfully come back online!

that was it. I ran the scan device action and they all came back online immediately. Thanks for the help!
