iOS app install asks for iTunes accountSolved

Hi, I’m trying to install a free App Store app on an iPhone through Hexnode, but the device asks to sign in with an iTunes account/Apple Account. I thought apps deployed from the portal didn’t need an Apple Account on the phone.

In the Apps tab, this app does not show anything under License Type, while some other apps show VPP. Does that mean the app was not added correctly?

Hi @itsme_aoi,

For silent installation of App Store apps on iOS devices, the app must be assigned using Apple VPP licenses from Apple Business or Apple School Manager. If the app does not show a VPP license type in Hexnode, the device may fall back to the standard App Store installation flow, which requires an Apple Account or iTunes account on the iPhone.

To fix this:

  1. Sign in to Apple Business or Apple School Manager.
  2. Go to App & Services.
  3. Click on View Store, and search for the required app.
  4. Even if the app is free, acquire the required number of licenses by completing the $0 purchase.
  5. In Hexnode, go to Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Apple VPP.
  6. Click Sync to import the newly acquired licenses.
  7. Go back to the Apps tab and confirm that the app now shows the VPP license type.
  8. Run a device scan or retry the app installation.

Once the VPP license is available and synced, the app can be installed silently without prompting for an Apple Account, provided the device and app deployment settings support silent installation.
