How to enroll iPhones in Hexnode when they are not in Apple Business Manager?Solved

We normally enroll new iPhones through Apple Business Manager so they come into Hexnode automatically during setup. This time, a couple of iPhones were shipped to us without being added to our ABM account. What is the recommended way to get these devices into Hexnode MDM? I have not used Apple Configurator for this before, so I’m trying to understand whether I should add them to ABM first or enroll them directly into Hexnode.

Hi @juan_garcia,

If you want these iPhones to follow the same Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) process as your other corporate devices, the recommended approach is to add them to Apple Business Manager using Apple Configurator.

The general process is:

  1. Use Apple Configurator to add the iPhones to your Apple Business account.
  2. In Apple Business, assign the devices to the MDM server linked with Hexnode UEM.
  3. Sync Automated Device Enrollment devices in Hexnode.
  4. Erase and reactivate the devices.
  5. Complete Setup Assistant, which will automatically enroll the devices into Hexnode.

This keeps the devices aligned with your existing enrollment workflow and ensures they receive the same ADE-based management settings as your other corporate-owned iPhones.

Is Apple Configurator the only option here? I only need to manage two devices, so I was wondering if adding them to Apple Business is worth the extra steps.

No, Apple Configurator is not the only option.

You can enroll the iPhones directly into Hexnode using one of the standard iOS enrollment methods without adding them to Apple Business. This can be a simpler option if you only need basic device management.

The difference is that direct enrollment will not provide the same Automated Device Enrollment experience you get through Apple Business. Features such as automated enrollment during setup, ADE-based supervision, Setup Assistant customization, and consistent deployment workflows are typically easier to manage through Apple Business.

Since your organization already uses Apple Business for company-owned devices, adding the iPhones to Apple Business through Apple Configurator would generally be the better long-term approach. However, if these devices only need basic management and you do not require ADE, direct enrollment into Hexnode would also work.

That makes sense. I’ll try the Apple Configurator method, so these iPhones follow the same enrollment process as our other Apple Business devices.
