iPhone stuck on “iPhone Locked to Owner” during setup after Hexnode enrollmentSolved

Hi, a new iPhone is stuck on the “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen during setup. The device was enrolled in Hexnode and had a policy applied, but it is now asking for an Apple Account that the user does not recognize.

A remote wipe was attempted from Hexnode, but it did not go through. Can Hexnode enrollment or a policy cause Activation Lock, and is there a way to force a wipe or reset from the portal?

Hi @remy,

Activation Lock is an Apple security feature. It is triggered when an iPhone is linked to an Apple Account with Find My enabled, or when the device is assigned through Apple Business using Automated Device Enrollment and Activation Lock-related controls are enabled.

A standard Hexnode enrollment or policy does not normally create an unknown Apple Account prompt by itself. If the device is already on the “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen, remote actions such as wipe may fail because the device has not completed activation and cannot fully process MDM commands.

Check whether an Activation Lock Bypass Code is available in Hexnode:

  1. Navigate to Manage > Devices.
  2. Open the affected iPhone and go to the Device Info tab.
  3. Look for the Activation Lock field. If an Activation Lock Bypass Code is listed, leave the Apple Account field blank on the iPhone and enter the bypass code in the password field.

If the iPhone was enrolled through Apple Business / Automated Device Enrollment, you can also check Apple Business and use the Turn Off Activation Lock option for the device, if available.

Thanks, the bypass code was available under the device details in Hexnode.
