How to enable single sign-on and sync local account passwords with Hexnode Access and Entra ID on macOS?Solved

We’re using ABM/ADE + Hexnode Access + Entra ID + FileVault. ADE works and Hexnode Access launches, but after Entra login the Mac prompts the user to create a local account password — and at that screen the cursor freezes, almost like Hexnode Access is crashing. Can Hexnode Access automatically create the local macOS account using the Entra password, with Secure Token/FileVault enabled, without a separate local password step? If so, how do we configure that, and how do we set up the required app registration in Entra? We attempted to create one but ran into an error on your portal.

Thankyou for raising this question.

The freeze you’re experiencing and the double authentication prompt are both related to how your current policy is configured. When using Microsoft Entra ID domains added to Hexnode portal as the authentication method, Hexnode Access creates two separate accounts on the device — a network account and a local account — which is why users are prompted twice.

To eliminate the separate local password step and enable automatic password sync, switch the authentication method to Creating app registration in your Entra portal. This method unlocks a password sync option within the Hexnode Access policy that keeps the local and network account passwords in sync, allowing users to authenticate just once.

To set this up:

  1. Create a new App Registration for Hexnode Access in your Microsoft Entra portal.

  1. Integrate it into Hexnode under Admin > Integration > Hexnode Access.

Regarding the error you encountered while creating the app registration, please refer to the step-by-step guidance in the Hexnode Help Center article: https://www.hexnode.com/mobile-device-management/help/manage-login-to-macs-using-cloud-identity-providers-with-hexnode-access/
