I am changing up our enrollment workflow. We used to enroll iPads directly into Hexnode using Apple configurator, but now we are routing them through Apple Business Manager (ABM) first.

Yesterday, I successfully added three new iPads into ABM and assigned them to our Hexnode MDM server. I went into the Hexnode portal and synced our Automated Device enrollment (ADE) account. Here is the weird part: only one of those iPads is actually showing up in my main Manage > Devices list.

I can see all three serial numbers if I look in the ADE devices list under the admin tab. The one that works says “Pushed”, but the other two just say “Assigned”. Why are they stuck in limbo, and how do I force them into the manage tab?

Hi @eduardo, this is actually the expected behavior for ADE enrollments!

When you see the profile status listed as “Assigned“, it just means Hexnode has successfully associated your enrollment profile with the device’s serial number in the cloud. The MDM knows it should manage the iPad, but the physical iPad hasn’t reached out to download those instructions yet.

When the status says “Pushed“, it means the device has actively communicated with Apple’s servers, downloaded the profile, and is now fully managed in your portal.

  • On the device, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings.
  • When the device reboots, connect it to Wi-Fi and proceed through the initial “Hello” setup screens.
  • A Remote Management screen will pop up. Just tap continue, and the device will automatically configure itself and jump into your Manage tab.

Ah, that makes total sense. Because I used configurator to inject them into ABM, I didn’t realize they needed a second factory reset for the iPad to actually check in with the cloud.

One quick question before I wipe them. When I tap to erase the iPad, Apple gives me two options: “Keep eSIM and Erase Data” or “Delete eSIM and Erase Data”. Does Hexnode care which one I pick for the enrollment to succeed?

Hexnode does not require a specific choice there at all! It is entirely up to your organizational needs.

If you want the iPads to retain their current cellular data plan after the reset (which is super helpful if you want them to enroll over cellular instead of Wi-Fi), go ahead and choose Keep eSIM. If you are handing the iPads to completely different users or retiring those specific cellular lines, you can choose Delete eSIM.

As long as the iPad has some form of internet connection when it boots back up to reach the Apple activation servers, the enrollment will process perfectly either way.
