Can iPadOS Updates be Pushed Over eSIM via Hexnode MDM?Solved

Good morning. We are currently attempting to push an iPadOS update through Hexnode UEM to a set of iPads that are connected to the internet exclusively via eSIM mobile data, with no Wi-Fi available. The update command appears to be getting rejected immediately. Could you advise whether this is feasible, what requirements need to be met, and clarify what can be handled remotely through Hexnode versus what would require physical access to the device?

Good morning. Thank you for reaching out.

First, please ensure the devices are supervised, as this is a hard requirement for remote OS update commands via Hexnode. The devices should also have sufficient battery charge before the update is attempted. The command itself can be triggered from the Hexnode console under Manage → Actions → Update OS.

Regarding the immediate rejection you are experiencing — this is most likely due to iOS treating large system downloads over a metered eSIM connection as a high-risk event for data consumption. Additionally, if Low Data Mode is enabled on the device, iOS will terminate any background update process immediately to preserve bandwidth.

Please note that the cellular data settings — specifically disabling Low Data Mode and enabling Allow More Data on 5G where applicable — need to be configured directly on the iPad via Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options. This cannot be done remotely through Hexnode or any MDM solution, as it is an Apple-enforced restriction.

As a recommended workaround, we would suggest using the Download Only command from the Hexnode console rather than Download and Install.  Once the download is complete, the installation can then be initiated as a separate step.
