How to halt the data drain on Android tablets?Solved

Hey,

Our logistics are handling around 50 Android tablets (Samsung Tab A8s). They use our custom delivery app, maybe Google Maps, and that’s it. Well, reality hit hard. Half the drivers have figured out how to minimize the app, and they’re streaming YouTube or browsing the web while waiting at loading docks. They are absolutely burning through our shared cellular data plan, and to make matters worse, they keep ignoring the OS update prompts, so my fleet is a fragmented security nightmare right now.

Any advice would save my sanity!

Don’t sweat it though, you can totally automate your way out of this. It’s actually super satisfying to set up.

First, you need to nuke their access to the home screen entirely. Go into your Hexnode portal and set up a Multi-App Kiosk Policy. Add only your custom delivery app and Google Maps. You can even customize the kiosk background with your company logo so it looks super professional. The tablet will literally only boot into that specific screen, making it physically impossible for them to open YouTube or a browser.

For the data drain, since they are in Kiosk mode, the bleeding should stop anyway. But to be safe, head over to Network Data Management. You can set up data usage restrictions per app or device, and even configure alerts so if a device hits, say, 2GB for the month, it notifies you or automatically blocks data for non-essential apps.

Finally, for the OS updates; you don’t want to rely on the drivers tapping accept. Use Hexnode’s OS Update Management policy. You can create a policy that forces the tablet to download and install OS updates strictly outside of their working hours (e.g., between 1 AM and 4 AM).

Wrap all those up into one single policy group, push it to your tablet device group, and go grab a coffee while the magic happens. Let me know if you run into any snags setting up the Kiosk payload!
