Hey people, we’re planning to use Windows Autopilot, but I’m not fully clear on what happens when the user first turns on the device. Does it install anything or is it just enrollment?
How does Autopilot actually work during setup?Solved

@jennifer, it’s a fair question. Autopilot gets misunderstood a lot here. It doesn’t reinstall Windows or set up the device from scratch. The OS is already there. What Autopilot does is recognize the device and pull it into your organization’s setup.
Got it. But how does it recognize the device?
That’s handled using the device’s hardware hash, which is uploaded beforehand (usually by your vendor). When the device is powered on and connected to Wi-Fi, it contacts Microsoft, identifies itself, and gets told which organization it belongs to. From there, it’s redirected to your Hexnode environment.
Enrollment then kicks in via Entra ID, and once that’s done, Hexnode starts pushing your apps, configurations, and policies to the device.
So basically, nothing is being “installed” beforehand?
Exactly. No imaging, no USB, no PXE. Just identity + configuration applied at setup.
Everything happens during setup based on the device identity and what you’ve already configured.
