People, what’s this all about?
Apple dropped this doc mentioning iOS 26 / macOS 26 letting devices move MDMs without a wipe. I’m late to the party, can someone explain what actually changed and why it matters?

Short version: Apple finally allows in-place MDM migration for supervised devices. If a device is on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26, you can reassign it to a new MDM in ABM/ASM and the user can enroll without erasing the device.

So this replaces the old “wipe → Setup Assistant → re-enroll” workflow?

Yup, the only check is that the device must be running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 to the stuff to happen.

For many scenarios, yes. Previously, MDM was effectively sticky, switching vendors usually meant a full erase because enrollment only happened during Setup Assistant. Apple has decoupled that for supervised devices on newer OS versions.

That’s huge. This is Apple finally admitting that “just wipe it” isn’t an enterprise strategy.

There’s also a second part people are missing: enforced enrollment deadlines. When you reassign the device in ABM/ASM, you can set a deadline by which the user must complete enrollment into the new MDM. Once the deadline is set, the OS handles the user experience. The user receives system notifications prompting them to confirm re-enrollment, with increasing frequency as the deadline approaches.

So the real change here isn’t just “no wipe.”
It’s that Apple is moving MDM migration and compliance into the OS itself, instead of relying on admins to chase users or reimage devices.

Thanks, guys.
