Hi everyone, we have an iPad running iOS 18.6 with a Hexnode policy applied. The policy has some apps added as Required Apps, but the device keeps showing this pop-up:
“App installation – Sign in to iTunes to allow portal.hexnodemdm.com to manage and install apps.”
This keeps happening, and it’s causing trouble for users handling iPad. We don’t want users to sign in with an Apple ID. How can we stop this?

We ran into this issue before. In our case, it happened because some required apps didn’t have proper VPP licenses assigned. Assigning the licenses stopped the Apple ID prompt.
Hey @sarahmiller , thanks for bringing this up. The “Sign in to iTunes” prompt usually shows up in a few situations, as @sammyy mentioned. If you’re seeing it, it’s almost always because of one of the following cases mentioned below.
Store apps added as Required Apps without a VPP license:
iOS will ask for an Apple ID if an app from the App Store included in the Required Apps list. doesn’t have a valid VPP license.
How to check:
In the Hexnode portal, go to Apps → Local Apps –> Search for the app → Check the license usage.
Assign VPP licenses if missing, then re-push the app.
System apps added as Required Apps
Pre-installed apps like Safari, Mail, or FaceTime should not be added as Required Apps.
Adding them again can leave them stuck in a “Pending” state and trigger Apple ID or “Continue with iTunes” prompt.
To fix this, go to Policies → iOS → App Management → Required Apps and remove any apps with bundle IDs starting with com.apple.
VPP token expired or not syncing
If the Apple VPP token is expired or not syncing, app installations can fail and trigger the prompt.
Check this under Admin → Apple Business/School Manager → Apple VPP.
Click Sync, and if the token is expired or fails to sync, renew it, sync again, and then scan the device so install commands are retried.
Once these three areas are sorted, the ‘Sign in to iTunes’ prompt should stop appearing.
