Self-Service Management -is it worth it?Solved

Hey peeps, I’ve been having a burning question lately about self-service management. I’ve heard the term come up in my circles quite a lot of times and am thinking about adopting it into our company’s ecosystem. Giving users the freedom to solve their issues seems like a good idea, but I have doubts about whether it’s just a hype train. I don’t want to make any decisions that I may regret in the future. Any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

@eliiza , I’m sure a lot of people arcurrently having doubts about self-service management just like yours. To answer your question, quite contrary to your belief, self-service management is indeed not a “hype train”. Self-service device management has been around for some time. Think about this hypothetical situationa user with a company device, while working, is suddenly faced with an issue that requires immediate attention and admin privileges. Mind you, they don’t have the admin control for obvious reasons. But here’s the catch: the user knows how to solve the issue by themselves, without the need for any assistanceBy tradition, they would reach out to their IT support to fix the problem, which could face a delay in response for reasons unknown (not every IT support moves like Steam support). And the user is left helpless to not have their issue resolved while having the power to fix it themselves.

Trust me when I say this; this hypothetical scenario is not as “hypothetical” as you think. It happens quite often. And there, @eliiza , lies the magic of selfservice device management.

Is admin privilege elevation the sole application for self-service management? Are there any other cases where it can be used?

@eliiza self-service management feature is also available in the form of self-service portals. It allows users to perform actions such as executing remote actions, and browsing or installing applications, configurations, or patches directly from the self-service portal.

Very interesting, @noah-blake But I got a question-by putting the onus on the user to troubleshoot their issues, wouldn’t it showcase a lack of responsibility from the IT supports end and put additional pressure on top of the users?

No, @carter We’re not talking about users that are interns or that have limited knowledge and experience about their device. As mentioned, self-service device management is solely meant for users who have the capability to deal with these issues by themselves. And honestly speaking, everyone wants quick gratification where their issues are solved asap. What better way than solving by themselves, instead of waiting around for help to arrive. Self-service can be exclusively reserved for this brand of users.

Does anyone know if Hexnode supports self-service management?

@laura , Hexnode currently supports Self Service device management feature for macOS devicesThrough the Hexnode portal, users can be provided temporary control of their devices by giving them elevated admin privileges. This can be done by configuring a policy from the portal.

To set the Self Service policy:

  1. Log in to the Hexnode UEM.

  1. Navigate to Policies > New Policy.

  1. Provide a policy name and description.

  1. Go to macOS > Configurations > Self Service. Then, configure the policy.

Once the policy is associated, users can initiate self-service by themselves through the Hexnode UEM app on the device.

Self Service for Windows devices is also on the way—stay tuned for that!

Are there any security measures in place for avoiding any misuse while implementing self-service in the portal?

@laura123 , currently while configuring the policy for self-service, you have the option Set the time period for administrator privileges to specify how long the elevated access for users lasts. This way you users cannot use admin privileges after the specified time periodYou can also restrict the number of times users can elevate their account using the setting Set a limit for the maximum number of times the user account can be elevated in a day”. These measures act as a safeguard against any potential misuse. I hope this has answered your question.
