A user is trying to add a website shortcut from Safari to the Home Screen on a managed iPhone. The steps seem to complete normally: open Safari, open the webpage, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. There is no error, but the shortcut never appears.

I tested the same flow on another managed device and saw the same behavior. The same website shortcut can be added on devices managed elsewhere, so it looks like something in the MDM configuration may be preventing it. Has anyone seen this with iOS devices managed through Hexnode?

This behavior is usually seen when a Home Screen Layout configuration is applied to the iOS device.

When the Home Screen Layout payload is active, iOS locks the Home Screen grid. In that state, users may still be able to go through Safari > Share > Add to Home Screen without seeing an error, but the manually added Safari shortcut may not appear.

There are two ways to handle this:

1. Deploy the website as an MDM Web Clip instead of adding it manually from Safari. This is the recommended option if the Home Screen layout needs to remain managed.

2. Remove the Home Screen Layout payload from the policy if users should be allowed to manually add Safari shortcuts to the Home Screen.

To deploy it as a Web Clip in Hexnode:

1. Go to Apps.

2. Select + Add Apps > Web App.

3. Enter the display name, URL, and icon for the shortcut.

4. Add the web app.

5. Go to Policies and either create a new policy or edit the policy assigned to the device.

6. Navigate to iOS > App Management > Web Clips.

7. Click Configure, then add the web app as a Web Clip.

8. Configure options such as Removable or Full Screen if required.

9. Assign the policy to the target device and save it.

Once the policy is applied, the shortcut should be pushed to the device Home Screen automatically.
