Offline Android devices stuck on Hexnode enrollment wizard due to license limitSolved

We have several Android devices at a remote site stuck on the Hexnode enrollment wizard during boot. Enrollment through the URL is not completing because our device license limit has been reached.

Some older devices in the portal are offline and not checking in, so they are not getting disenrolled normally. We are considering using Disenroll Device and then Mark as Disenrolled to free up license slots, but I’m concerned about whether forcing disenrollment for offline devices could cause issues on the physical devices.

If the license slots are released, the plan is to enroll the stuck devices again using the Hexnode enrollment URL or Android Enterprise QR code. Is marking offline devices as disenrolled safe in this situation?

Marking offline devices as disenrolled from the Hexnode portal is the fastest way to release license slots when the devices are no longer checking in.

This action does not brick or damage the physical device. Since the device is offline, Hexnode cannot deliver the normal unenrollment command to it. Mark as Disenrolled simply removes the server-side association for that old device record and releases the license immediately.

You can follow these steps:

1. Go to Manage and select the old or inactive device.
2. Click Actions > Disenroll Device.
3. Since the device is offline, it will move to a Pending Disenrollment state.
4. Select the device again from Manage, or go to Reports > Disenrollment Pending Devices.
5. Click Actions > Mark as Disenrolled.
6. Once the license is released, continue enrollment on the remote Android device using the enrollment URL or Android Enterprise QR code.

After re-enrollment, the device should appear as a new active device record in the Manage tab.

I ran into something similar. After using Disenroll Device, the license was still not available because the device was only in Pending Disenrollment. The license freed up only after using Mark as Disenrolled on that pending record.

That is expected. For offline devices, Disenroll Device alone waits for the device to check in and receive the unenrollment command. If the device cannot check in, the record remains pending.

Mark as Disenrolled is the step that confirms the old device record should be treated as removed from the portal, which releases the license slot immediately. It is safe to use when the device is offline or no longer manageable from Hexnode.
