Migrate macOS and Windows devices to Hexnode without wiping themSolved

Is there an easy way to migrate devices from our current MDM into Hexnode without factory resetting them?

Most of the fleet is macOS and Windows 10/11. The Macs are tied to Apple Business Manager/ADE, and the existing MDM can still push packages to both Mac and Windows devices. Ideally, we want a cutover that keeps user data intact and avoids end-user downtime.

Hi @tomas,

For macOS and Windows devices, you can use Hexnode Gateway to automate migration from an existing MDM to Hexnode without wiping the device.

For macOS devices enrolled through Apple Business/ADE, the usual flow is:

  1. Reassign the devices in Apple Business from the current MDM server to the Hexnode MDM server.
  2. Generate the Hexnode Gateway macOS package from the Hexnode portal.
  3. Deploy the generated .pkg to the Macs using the current MDM.
  4. Once the migration package runs and the old management profile is removed as part of the cutover, the device enrolls into Hexnode based on the Apple Business assignment.

This preserves user data and avoids a factory reset.

For Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices:

  1. Generate the Hexnode Gateway .msi package from the Hexnode portal.
  2. Deploy the .msi using the existing MDM or software deployment tool.
  3. The installer runs silently, unenrolls the device from the current MDM, and enrolls it into Hexnode.

If you use Windows Autopilot, also update the MDM tenant mapping in Microsoft Entra ID so future provisioning goes to Hexnode.
