macOS wipe issue

expand collapsive

Hi all,

I’m trying to wipe a device using the actions. On the boot recovery assistant it shows, “The version of macOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled. Use Recovery to reinstall macOS or select another startup disk”. Seems like the hard drive is still not wiped. What do I do now?

    Hello @Daan,

It does not seem to be an issue with the Wipe Device action initiated from the Hexnode portal. However, error messages of a similar kind can appear on a Mac when it is restored or erased.

The cause of the error may differ; however, at the time, the message itself might recommend a solution. In your case, you can use macOS Recovery to reinstall macOS.

    1. Re-check network connectivity. Make sure the device has a stable internet connection.
    2. Startup from macOS Recovery
      • On Mac with Apple Silicon,
        1. Turn on the device.
        2. Hold down the power button until the startup options window appears.
        3. Click on Options and press Continue.
      • On Mac with Intel processor
        1. Turn on the device.
        2. Immediately, hold down command-R until the Apple logo or other image is displayed.

You might be asked to choose a user. Select the user, click Next and enter the password.

    3. Reinstall macOS.
      1. Choose Reinstall macOS on the utilities window in macOS recovery.
      2. Press Continue.
      3. Next, follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the installation is done, the device restarts to the setup assistant.

    Hi,

Thanks for reaching out to us again,

Apple recommends a few workarounds that will help you resolve the issues when you install or update macOS.

The following workarounds can help you with it:

    1. Re-check network connectivity.
    2. Install as the device is started up in safe mode. The following doc will help you install after repairing the startup disk using disk utility.
    3. Install when the device is started up from macOS Recovery.
    4. Install after erasing the Mac. Then, you may reinstall macOS or restore from a backup.

Go through the troubleshooting doc to learn more.
