iPad check-in delayed in HexnodeSolved

I have a previously enrolled iPad that is showing a delayed check-in in Hexnode. It checked in when I first opened it, but then it would not check in again for several minutes. Does this usually mean the MDM connection is broken, or can the check-in just be delayed?

Hi @richard_hank ,

A delayed check-in on an already enrolled iPad does not always indicate a broken enrollment.

For iOS/iPadOS devices, Hexnode relies on Apple Push Notification service (APNs) to notify the device. After receiving the APNs notification, the device contacts the MDM server and updates its check-in status. If there is temporary network latency or a delay in receiving the APNs push, the portal may continue to show an older check-in time even if the device is powered on.

Useful checks in this situation are:

  1. Confirm the iPad has a stable internet connection.
  2. Verify that Date & Time on the iPad are correct, preferably set automatically.
  3. Restart the device once.
  4. Open the Hexnode app on the iPad and use Sync to trigger communication.
  5. Wait a few minutes and refresh the device status in the portal.

If the device checks in after a short delay, the most likely cause is a temporary network or APNs push delay. Re-enrollment is usually not required for a one-time delay.

That makes sense. In my case it randomly checked in after a while, even though the restart and Sync button did not seem to do anything immediately. So this can happen even if the iPad itself looks online?

Yes. General internet access and MDM check-in are related, but they are not exactly the same path.

The iPad may be able to browse or use apps while the APNs notification used for MDM communication is delayed, queued, or temporarily interrupted. Once the notification is received, the device contacts Hexnode and the check-in timestamp updates.

If this happens repeatedly on the same network, it is worth testing the device on a different Wi-Fi network or cellular hotspot. If check-ins work normally elsewhere, the original network may be delaying or filtering APNs/MDM traffic.
