iOS VPP app install still asks for Apple ID on locked devicesSolved

I’m trying to install an App Store app on supervised iOS devices where Apple ID changes are blocked by policy. The users do not have Apple IDs, so they can’t sign in when the install prompt appears.

The VPP token from Apple Business Manager is already synced in Hexnode, and other apps bought through ABM are installing fine. This one app still seems to behave like a normal App Store app and asks for an Apple ID during installation. What should I check?

For locked iOS devices, the app must be deployed as a VPP app with device-based licensing. If Hexnode deploys the app as a regular Store app, iOS will require the user to sign in with an Apple ID to complete the installation.

Check the following:

1. In Apple Business, go to Apps and Books and confirm that licenses were acquired for the exact app you are trying to deploy. This is required even for free apps.

2. In Hexnode, sync the VPP token from Admin > Apple Business > VPP Settings.

3. Go to the Apps inventory in Hexnode and search for the app.

4. Use the License Type filter or app details to confirm that the app is listed as a VPP app.

5. Deploy that VPP version of the app to the device or include it in the app policy.

If the app appears only as a Store app and not under VPP, the device will continue to ask for an Apple ID.
