We manage several supervised iPads in Hexnode and want to push the latest iPadOS update from the portal. The devices show different OS versions, but when checking the update options, the OS Update action appears grayed out. Is there something that needs to be enabled before iOS updates can be pushed through Hexnode?

The OS Update action can appear grayed out if the Hexnode subscription plan currently in use does not include OS update management. When the OS update feature is available, iOS/iPadOS updates can be managed in two main ways:

  1. One-time action: Go to the device in the Hexnode portal and use Actions > Updates > OS Update to push an available update to the selected device.
  2. Policy-based update configuration: Configure iOS OS update settings through a policy to automate how updates are downloaded and installed.

Hexnode reflects the OS version reported by the device, but pushing or enforcing OS updates from the portal requires the OS update management feature to be available in the plan. If the option is grayed out, the feature availability for the current plan should be checked.

Once the feature is available, can we push the update directly to all iPads, or does the user still need to approve it on the device?

For supervised iOS/iPadOS devices, Hexnode can be used to push supported OS updates remotely once OS update management is available. You can either initiate the update manually using the OS Update action or configure update behavior through a policy. The device will update to the latest compatible iOS/iPadOS version available for that model. The exact update behavior may still depend on Apple’s device-side requirements, such as battery level, network connectivity, and whether the update package is available for the device.

We also had trouble checking older location history for the same iPads. Is there a retention limit for location tracking data?

Location history is retained for 60 days by default. To review location data, use the Reports section in the Hexnode portal and generate a location report for the required date range. For continuous location tracking on supervised iOS devices, make sure the Hexnode app has Location Services permission set to Always on the device. Location records may be unavailable for certain periods if the device was offline, location permission was changed, or the device could not report its location during that time.
