iOS ADE enrollment fails with “Unable to Check for Update”Solved

A few Apple devices assigned through Automated Device Enrollment are failing during setup with the message “Unable to Check for Update.”

The devices are assigned to an ADE enrollment profile in Hexnode, and wiping/retrying enrollment did not help at first. The ADE profile settings look correct, so I’m trying to avoid recreating the whole enrollment setup if possible.

Is there a way to refresh the ADE enrollment profile or force the device to pull the latest enrollment payload?

Hello @carter ,

This behavior can occur when the device continues to receive an older cached ADE enrollment payload, even though the ADE profile appears correctly assigned in Hexnode.

Try refreshing the ADE enrollment profile assigned to the device:

  1. Navigate to Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Automated Device Enrollment.

  2. Click on the Enrollment Profiles tab to view your configurations.

  3. Click on the name of the ADE profile currently assigned to the affected devices to open it.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the profile settings window and click Save without making any changes.

  5. Erase the device and restart the ADE enrollment flow.

Resaving the profile refreshes the enrollment payload associated with that specific ADE profile. After that, the device should receive the updated payload during activation and proceed normally.

Ah, now I get it. I had already wiped and retried enrollment, but I didn’t resave the ADE profile because the settings looked fine. Now resaving the profile worked.
