How to keep data when unenrolling Android and iOS devices before switching phones?Solved

I’m replacing a few old devices and want to make sure users don’t lose their personal data before unenrolling from Hexnode. This is for both Android and iOS. iOS is fine since we can use iCloud, but for Android we’d prefer not to use Google Cloud backup. What’s the safest way to move the data before removing management?

Hi @elliot,

For Android and iOS, the safest approach is to complete the backup or device migration before unenrolling the old device.

For Android, the impact of unenrollment depends on the enrollment type:

Work Profile / BYOD: Unenrollment removes only the work profile, work apps, and work data. Personal apps, photos, files, SMS, and other personal data remain on the device.
Device Owner / Fully Managed: Unenrollment usually triggers a factory reset. Treat this as a complete wipe and migrate all required data before removing management.

If you do not want to use Google Cloud backup on Android, use direct device-to-device transfer during the new phone setup:

  1. Turn on the new Android device.
  2. In the setup wizard, choose the option to copy apps and data.
  3. Connect the old and new Android devices using a USB-C cable when prompted.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to transfer supported data directly between the devices.

This typically transfers photos, videos, SMS, call logs, local contacts, device settings, and supported app data, depending on the Android version and device manufacturer.

For iOS:

  1. Back up the old iPhone or iPad using iCloud Backup, or create an encrypted backup using Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows.
  2. Set up the new iPhone or iPad and restore from the iCloud or encrypted computer backup.
  3. After the personal data is restored, re-enroll the new device into Hexnode using the enrollment method provided by the IT admin.

Note that unenrolling an iOS device removes configuration profiles and managed apps. Local data associated with managed apps may also be removed, so backing up before unenrollment is important.
