We manage a set of iPhones and want to back up WhatsApp chats and iMessages without using iCloud. Is there any way to do this through Hexnode, or another non-iCloud method that works for managed iPhones? Ideally, we want to retain message history but avoid iCloud backup.
Back up WhatsApp chats and iMessages on iPhone without iCloudSolved

Hi @grace_t ,
Apple’s iOS privacy and sandboxing model prevents MDM solutions, including Hexnode UEM, from directly accessing or extracting app-level messaging data such as WhatsApp chat databases, iMessages, or SMS histories from managed iPhones.
For non-iCloud backups, the available options are handled outside MDM:
WhatsApp chats
- Use WhatsApp’s manual export option for individual chats.
- Open WhatsApp > open the chat or group > tap the contact/group name > select Export Chat.
- Choose whether to export with media or without media.
- Save or share the generated export file to a local location, computer, or email.
This is a manual, per-chat export. It is useful for record keeping, but it is not the same as an automated WhatsApp backup that can be restored directly into WhatsApp.
iMessage / SMS history
- iMessages do not have a built-in standalone export option similar to WhatsApp’s Export Chat feature.
- The supported non-iCloud method is to create an encrypted local backup of the iPhone using Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows/older macOS.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer, trust the device, enable Encrypt local backup, and run Back Up Now.
Hexnode UEM can manage the device, but it cannot retrieve or back up personal messaging content from inside these apps due to Apple’s platform restrictions.

So there’s no Hexnode action that can pull Messages or WhatsApp data from supervised iPhones? We were hoping there might be a remote backup command or report for this.
Correct. Supervision does not grant MDM access to personal app containers or Apple Messages data. Hexnode UEM cannot remotely collect WhatsApp chats, iMessage history, SMS content, or the underlying databases.
If iCloud cannot be used, the practical approach is:
- Use encrypted Finder/iTunes backups for full-device local backup needs.
- Use WhatsApp Export Chat when specific WhatsApp conversations need to be archived separately.
- Maintain an internal process for where those local backups or exports are stored, since Hexnode UEM will not receive or manage that message content.
Also note that Finder/iTunes backups are generally restored as part of a device restore workflow. They are not intended as a selective message export tool from Hexnode UEM.
