Hexnode location services greyed out and app uninstall failing on Samsung Android tabletSolved

I have a Samsung tablet managed with Hexnode where location services seem to be disabled. In the Hexnode for Work app, the location option is greyed out and tapping it does nothing. Android Settings shows the location permission for Hexnode for Work as allowed all the time, but I cannot modify it.
I also enabled location tracking in the policy, but the policy status shows as failed on the device. Around the same time, I tried uninstalling an app from the tablet and that failed too, even after restarting the device.
One thing I noticed is that the Hexnode agent on this tablet is much older than the one on our other tablets. This device is on version 16.0.0, while the others are on a newer version. Could the outdated agent be causing both the location tracking and app uninstall issues?

Yes, an outdated Hexnode for Work agent can cause Android policy execution and app management actions to fail, especially if other managed tablets are already running a newer agent version.

For Android Enterprise devices, some permissions may appear locked or unmodifiable on the device because they are controlled by the MDM configuration. If the agent is outdated or unable to process newer management commands correctly, you may see symptoms such as:

  • Location tracking policy failing on the device
  • Location options appearing greyed out in the Hexnode app
  • App uninstall or install actions not completing
  • Remote app actions remaining pending or failed

Try updating the Hexnode for Work app first:

  1. Make sure Google Play Store is not restricted on the tablet through policy.
  2. Open Google Play Store directly on the device and leave it open for a few minutes so it can complete background updates and sync managed app data.
  3. In the Hexnode UEM portal, go to the device.
  4. Use Actions > Install application.
  5. Search for Hexnode for Work and push the installation/update.

App installation and update commands for Android Enterprise devices are handled through Google Play. If Play Store is disabled or restricted, the Hexnode agent update may not complete.
