Google Pixel 7a asks for factory reset during Android Enterprise QR enrollmentSolved

I’m trying to re-enroll a Google Pixel 7a into Hexnode after a factory reset. The device was previously enrolled under the same organization.

When I try to enroll it from Enroll > Android Enterprise by scanning the QR code, Android keeps saying the device needs to be reset again before enrollment can continue. I already reset it more than once and tried scanning the QR code again.

The device is also listed in our Google Zero-Touch portal. Is the QR code method still required here, or is Zero-Touch supposed to take over automatically?

Hi @itsme_aoi,

Since the Pixel device is already registered in the Google Zero-Touch portal, you do not need to enroll it again by scanning the Android Enterprise QR code.

For Zero-Touch enrolled Android devices, the expected flow is:

  1. Factory reset the device.
  2. Start the initial Android setup wizard.
  3. Connect the device to the internet.
  4. Android detects that the device is assigned to an organization through Zero-Touch.
  5. The device automatically starts corporate enrollment with Hexnode.

The repeated reset prompt can appear when a device that is already assigned through Zero-Touch is manually taken through another Android Enterprise provisioning method, such as QR code enrollment. In this case, continue with the normal setup after reset and allow Zero-Touch enrollment to trigger automatically.

That makes sense. I was scanning the Android Enterprise QR code because that’s how I usually enroll devices manually. After resetting and continuing through setup without scanning the QR code, the Zero-Touch enrollment started automatically.

One more thing came up during enrollment: the phone showed a message saying the admin has set VPN as mandatory and asked me to tap Activate to continue enrolling, but the Activate button was disabled.

Hi @itsme_aoi,

The VPN activation prompt can appear if a Hexnode policy on the device requires network data usage tracking. In that case, the VPN component is mandatory because Android uses it to monitor and report network data usage.

If the Activate button is temporarily disabled during setup, restart the device and continue enrollment again. Once the setup resumes, the prompt may clear or allow the required VPN activation to proceed.

After enrollment completes, confirm the result by checking whether the device appears in the Manage tab in the Hexnode portal.
